Brian Dowd was named Chief Executive Officer of the company's Insurance - North American operating division in May 2006 and to the additional position of Vice Chairman, ACE Limited and ACE Group Holdings, in May 2009.  He is responsible for ACE’s retail and wholesale property and casualty insurance business in the United States and Canada as well as the company’s ACE Bermuda operations.  Mr. Dowd also has corporatewide executive responsibility for the ACE Group’s global product underwriting boards and the strategy and purchase of the company’s reinsurance programs.

In January 2005, Mr. Dowd was named Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of ACE USA, ACE’s U.S.-based retail operating division; Chairman of ACE Westchester, ACE’s U.S.-based wholesale focused excess and surplus property and casualty operation; and President of ACE INA Holdings, an insurance holding company that encompasses many of the organization’s U.S.-based service and support functions.

Prior to those appointments, Mr. Dowd served as President & Chief Executive Officer of ACE Westchester. In January 2004, Mr. Dowd was elected to the position of Office of the Chairman of ACE INA Holdings Inc. – a position he currently holds along with that of President.

From 2001 to 2002, Mr. Dowd served as President, ACE Specialty P&C Group, responsible for managing Global Property, Property Engineering, Energy, Power Products, Commercial Marine and the U.S. International businesses. Prior to this position, Mr. Dowd served as Executive Vice President of Property for ACE USA and Senior Vice President of Property at ACE Bermuda Insurance Limited, where he headed the Excess Property Team from 1997 to 1999.

Mr. Dowd joined ACE in 1995 from Arkwright Mutual Insurance Company, where he spent seven years as senior underwriting officer and was responsible for underwriting primary property policies for Fortune 1000 companies and managing a staff of property underwriters.

Mr. Dowd earned a Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Northern Illinois University. He also holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) professional designation.
